Stop me if you’ve heard this one.
When I first decided to pursue a career in copywriting, a term project I wrote for the course accidentally landed me a major label record deal. Two Top 20 videos on MuchMusic followed, as did songs charting on rock radio across the country; tour dates across Canada, the US and Europe; music in TV shows and films; and three studio albums.
Sang the songs. Left the stage. Kept the hair.
I wanted to return to copywriting, but I needed to sharpen my chops first. One of my freelance writing gigs at the time turned into an Associate Editor position at Rue Morgue, an 80-page monthly publication devoted to exploring the roots of our collective fascination with monsters and things that go bump in the night.
After three years of facing my fears, I needed a new challenge. I joined “The Circus,” slaving on some of the biggest Hollywood features and TV shows ever shot in Canada. Roughly 20,000 hours of on-set experience has given me a special understanding of production and, as you can imagine, a lot of colourful stories. Best of all, though, it’s where I met my wife.
Then a friend told me about the Humber College Post-Grad Advertising Copywriting course. Suddenly that yearning to return to my original path came flooding back. I enrolled and graduated with an Academic Award of Excellence.
These days I’m an Associate Creative Director with SkipTheDishes. I’ve conceived and written campaigns and creative assets for Skip (obviously), but also Toyota, the Toronto Blue Jays, Starbucks, CAA Insurance, Five9, Harry Rosen, Mattamy Homes, LandShark Lager, Freedom Mobile, Seagrams and many more.
So, if you’re looking for clever ideas, relentless enthusiasm, and dogged determination, we should meet for either fancy coffees or fancy cocktails ‘cause that’s just the way I roll.
